Thrifty Stuff

After I cooked Hubby an artery-clogging breakfast this morning, we headed out to the . . .

GOODWILL SUPERSTORE! We'd never been to this store before and it really was pretty Super! I could easily have spent a couple more hours in there, but Hubby's not quite the thorough shopper I am, and he was getting a little bored, I think. Besides, I know he wanted to get home to watch the 49ers lose to whoever they played today. I'm sure I'll go back and visit again, though.

I did manage to find a few odds and ends--mostly centered around food! I found this cool cookbook, Cooking from Quilt Country--full of Amish and Menonite recipes.

I've already bookmarked a few pages and, since I had to go to the grocery store this afternoon, I purchased what I needed to make a few things. Like this apple pie . . .

Those owl salt and pepper shakers in the upper left? Thrift store today. I also found a pie cutter--one of those metal things with "blades" that you sit on top of the pie and press down to cut the whole thing into pieces. I've always thought those were kind of neat, but not neat enough to pay full retail. $1.49 seemed worth it though.

Doesn't the pie look yummy? Especially on those glass dessert/luncheon plates I found today? And, of course, I wouldn't forget to serve the pie with fresh coffee--laced with Kahlua and half and half. By the way, they had a bunch of these glass plates in different styles. Hubby would have killed me if I'd bought more, though. Surprisingly, he didn't even let out a whimper when he saw these. Of course, there was a piece of warm apple pie on his. It really IS all about presentation!

When I wasn't shopping or cooking, I was working on the witch. This was actually a photo I took this morning, and many of the pieces are just pinned on, but by the end of the day, I only had a few more of the prepped pieces left to sew and then there are a few more small things to add--like a purse, fingernails, and a spider hanging from the hat. The face and a few other things require some embroidery, but it's coming along.

I'm not quite sure whether Spike likes it or not. She had a wonderful time tonight pulling appliqued border blocks off the design wall. Then she'd laugh at me when I put them back. Then she'd pull them off again.

Tomorrow we have a day trip planned and then dinner out with friends. I could really get used to this vacation stuff!

I'm new to your blog and have been enjoying all your tidbits. Your Happy Jacks was very cute and love your witch! I, too, enjoy browsing putting together little vignettes, so your added pictures of timely seasonal decorating is of interest to me. Love it!

What a wonderful looking witch! She's great! I don't like apple pie, I know. Very un-american but yours looks very yummy!

That little witch is cute! The quilty peeps and I have had and loved that cookbook for 20 or so years -- the oven baked chicken recipe is a keeper, among others. And just a few months ago I was shocked to find out that one of the girls at work, who I've known forever is the author's niece.
