I know with your arms/hands you probably can't but that blank space could be used for embroidery if you wanted.
I like your way too. Most of the bloggers making this month's Schnibble have stated the blocks were too busy sitting all together. I've seen a few with sashing but I like your layout.
I really like the way you laid out the blocks! You can really focus on the variations in them easier.
