Eye Candy
I wanted to show you Ronda's postage stamp quilt project--she made it out of scraps using Bonnie's leaders and enders idea. All of those small squares are made from scraps cut to 1-1/2". Yikes! Nice job, Ronda!
Ah, speaking of candy, maybe some of you can help me come up with an idea. Normally at Halloween, I fill jars, big and small, with candy. It's really just for show in the kitchen, but some of the better candy eventually gets eaten; even some of the not-so-great candy gets eaten if the cravings are strong enough! This year as I was pushing my grocery cart around loaded with a big bag of candy corn it occurred to me I probably shouldn't be putting that kind of temptation in my way--I'm not sure I'm strong enough to stay on the diet and resist day after day! Can you think of any ideas for filling my jars? I need ideas that aren't too expensive and would look well with the Halloween/Fall decor. I was thinking maybe some nuts in their shells might be good. Popped popcorn might be fun too--can you think of a way to make it colored? What else? Any other ideas? Thanks for your help!
A stroll around the dollar store (Dollar Tree) might give you some ideas-- colored glass gems? Maybe some Halloween tinsel, the lightweight wire kind, loosely placed in the jar. Small jars--spools of orange and black thread or fall colors???
ReplyDeleteYou can fill the jars with fake fall leaves, Halloween or fall garland, colored glass beads, plastic spiders....that's all I can think of right now.
ReplyDeleteI filled an old canning jar with white stuffing and then bought some candy that look like eyeballs and put them around in places so you could see them. Cute.

How about yellow unpopped popcorn, dried beans, buttons, etc.
ReplyDeleteGummy Worms.
ReplyDeleteLots of good ideas......all I can add is maybe a jar full of un-popped popcorn and maybe a jar of dried peas, like the kind you make split pea soup with. They are a nice green color to go with oranges and yellows and rust colors.....Hey, maybe a jar layered with the various dried peas, beans and such.
ReplyDeleteUsing other things besides 'candy' is a great idea!!
ReplyDeleteCheck out Pintrest.....there are all kinds of ideas on there.

How about mixed nuts still in the shell (acorns, filberts, pecans, walnuts etc...) The different shapes and colors would look pretty :)
ReplyDeleteHow about bits of Halloween colored fabrics?
ReplyDeleteLeaves, real and silk, acorns, silk flowers. Put an inflated plastic bag in the jar before you add the stuff around it. Then you don't need as much.
ReplyDeleteLast year I did some canning jars as well as tall glass cylinder shaped vases with various fall colored items. Some I layered 3 different types/colors of beans, like kidney, split pea and white beans. Tied pretty fall ribbons around each and tied with a bow--the canning jar I tied around the top where the grooves are. I also did some with unpopped popcorn, nestled a votive fall candle in it's metal holder (very small tealight size) and tied jute around it. I also did candy corn and one of acorns as well. If you have collected any birds' nests, they might look fun in the top as well. Fall is my favorite time of year and I love fall decorating. Still HOT in Texas so I can't get in the mood until we have some cool temps, and rain along with it would be nice. Looking forward to photos of what you decide!
ReplyDeleteOh, forgot to also add, I put a toilet tissue roll with tape across the end and put it inside the larger jars/vases to take up some space.
ReplyDeleteThat is a true scrappy quilt!
ReplyDeletei don't suppose i should tell you that Starburst Candy Corn is Oh. My. Gawd. Good. then, should i?!?
ReplyDeletethe good news is that it has no fat ...
the bad news is that it still turns into fat if you eat it...
i told myself i can eat ONLY THE RED ONES, and have to leave the rest for the kids...
Auntia says we have to go to Target tomorrow and buy another bag ...
sigh...
How about coloring some rice or macaroni in fall colors to put in the jars. There are directions here:

I just buy candy I don't like....believe it or not, there s some I don't like!
Thread spools in fall colors, and in Halloween colors... If you're like me with a small thread hoard in case, you know, there's a thread supply chain glitch that lasts for 25 years. I've also seen fabric strips rolled and tied to look like candy. - melanie
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of sunflower seeds. I often fill jars or a cake plate with acorns that I pick from outside and sometimes those very very small pinecones that fall off of trees.
