Due to a series of mishaps, which I might talk about at some other time, it's taken quite awhile to finish this quilt, but now that it's done, I'm very happy to have it hanging up in my home! I've added all of the buttons and embellishments now, although I'd like to find some apple buttons to add to September's block; but I can do that later.
When I took down my 4th of July quilt to put up the Country Cottages quilt, I also took down the floral garland that ran across the top. Miss Spike soon found the garland and wrapped herself in flowers!
She's a funny girl!
My computer difficulties last night turned out to be related to the fact that Blogger no longer supports IE8, which is what I was running. Actually, they stopped supporting IE8 last fall, so it's a mystery to many of us bloggers why everything worked fine until yesterday. Because I have Windows XP, though, I couldn't just update to IE9. My options were Chrome or Firefox; I decided to go with Firefox because I've had a problem with Chrome once before AND it's a Google product--kind of childish, I know, but since I was annoyed by Google/Blogger at the time, I just wasn't in the mood to select Chrome. So we'll see how this works. At least I can write my posts for now.
I mentioned before that Hubby and I are going on a cruise to Alaska--in fact, I asked for some input from those of you who have cruised before, and I appreciate all of your help--it made it much easier for us to decide to give it a try. We will also be staying in or around the Seattle area for a couple days, and I wanted to get more input from those of you familiar with the area. Hubby and I vacationed for several days in Seattle before, so we've seen most of the highlights. We've talked a little bit about traveling out of Seattle but we don't know what else in northwestern Washington would be fun to see and do. Keep in mind that Hubby uses a wheelchair. Any suggestions? (We've also stayed on Vancouver Island/Victoria and Vancouver--great places but we'd like to do something different this time.) Our vacation is coming up in just a couple weeks so there's not much time to plan. Thanks for any help you can give us!
I love your quilt, it's very pretty. Have a great holiday in the NW. We went to Vancouver in 1992 and travelled around the Rockies. I very much want to go back there some day. Bev in Britain.
ReplyDeleteVery cute quilt, love the bright colors with the black border.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about Seattle, so can't help you there.
The green ric rac on your quilt is so eye-catching--beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt's about an hour and 15 minutes to drive but way up near the Canadian border is the wonderful town of LaConner. The shops are Fabulous (and really reasonable!), you'll pass tulip fields as far as the eye can see on your way AND there's a splendid quilt museum there! The town is on a waterfront, a few blocks long on a single street and has sidewalks on both sides. I go there every time I visit my high school friend who lives in Seattle.
ReplyDeleteThe tulips will be long gone up by LaConner by now. The quilt museum is great however.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Seattle, but haven't lived there for 44 years. I've been trying to think of places we used to go. Woodland Park Zoo is fabulous. So if it has been awhile since you spent time in a great zoo I recommend that. Also spending time on the Sound at one of the many city parks. Taking the ferry to Whidbey Island is fun too, and Whidbey is beautiful, with good quilt shops. We always loved visiting the Hiram Chittenden locks in Ballard when we were kids. They connect Lake Washington to Puget Sound. I presume you've done the downtown waterfront and Pike Place Market, but if not then I highly recommend it. A day driving up to Mt Rainier is fabulous - I'd choose that rather than going to LaConner any day. It would take 2.5 to 3 hours to get up to Paradise. You'd go south to Tacoma and follow the Mt. Rainier signs from there. I can look up the road numbers for you if you want. We love going to Safeco Field, if you happen to be a baseball fan. It is a beautiful ballpark. Tacoma also has the Dale Chihuly glass museum and Point Defiance Park.
I'm sure I can come up with other ideas if you want more. Just let me know.
PS. Everything I mentioned will work for a wheelchair. He can get into the zoo for free, and can get special seating on the field level at the ball park. There is much to see on Mt. Rainier that is wheelchair accessible. I'm not 100% positive about the locks, but I can't imagine they aren't. Forgot to mention that before.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to do the Alaska cruise, I have heard they are wonderful. I have once piece of advise for a cruise (and actually any trip), take half the clothes and twice the money :)
ReplyDeleteYour cottage quilt turned out really nice!
Your quilt is beautiful! I would love to know some machine quilting tips since I have a Juki and everything I need to do machine quilting. I know it's takes time and practice. You do such great work.
ReplyDeleteI am no help to you as far as your vacation. It sounds like fun.
Yes, the locks are very interesting and my fisherman husband really enjoyed seeing that. We'e made several trips to Seattle on way to/from Alaska and we liked it so much, we've made a few trips back just to the city. One place we liked was east to Snoqualmie. Stay at the Inn there overlooking the waterfall. Fabulous place. And the area is very scenic-- as all of WA. We also did whale watching off Orcas Island when staying there once at an inn. Never have seen so many whales! Mt Rainier area is beautiful but the day we drove down was completely covered in clouds. But there is a wonderful quilt shop at the foothills in a little town...don't remember town name but shop was Wild Rose. Charming little town. I've heard there is a small Bavarian town north east of Seattle and that is on my list as well. Just looked it up--Leavenworth. Patti might know about it--if worth it.
ReplyDeleteAlso a nice quilt shop/bed and breakfast in Leavenworth.
ReplyDeleteLove your cottage quilt. Nice work! Sounds as though you have already received some great suggestions of places to visit while you're in Seattle. I agree the Quilt Museum in LaConner is a must see. You can visit their website to see what show they are featuring while you're here: http://www.laconnerquilts.com/ Enjoy your visit!
ReplyDeleteOh Kim...love your cottage quilt...did you print it off Shabby Fabrics? I got sick the end of last year and when I got my patterns out I realized that I missed November and December. Any chance you could share them with me. I so want to make this cute little quilt...I was going to try and make my own blocks. Thanks for sharing with us.
ReplyDeleteWe just returned from a cruise through the inside passage to Alaska. It was a great trip although we discovered that we are not "cruise people." All of the excursions we took off the ship were wheelchair accessible. In Seattle, we went to the Dale Chihuly exhibit that opened last May. It's next to the Space Needle and is a must-see in my opinion.
