Remember webrings?
When I first started blogging--back when we had to walk ten miles to school and home again, uphill each way because cars hadn't been invented yet--there were webrings. Well, there still ARE webrings, really, but it's not quite the same, I think.
Back then, blog surfing was much harder. The simplest way to discover new blogs was to come upon a webring member and click the "next" on the ring badge and travel from blog to blog, around and around the ring. If you were lucky, you'd stumble upon a member who belonged to two rings, and then you could click the "next" on the other ring badge and discover a whole other group of quilt bloggers.
Back then, I thought about joining a webring. There were Quilt Mavericks (headed up by Bonnie Hunter); Stash Quilts (where I found Vicky of LA Quilter--who is still working that stash); and Heartstrings--I'm pretty sure there are more webrings but I've forgotten what they are. I remember reading at the time what each group focused on and/or required of its members and I didn't think I really fit into any one group very well. Of course, not being part of a ring meant it would be hard for anyone to find my little blog, but that was okay--I enjoyed chatting with the people whose blogs I'd found through the webrings, and they often paid back the visit. After awhile, it seemed like I was getting a little more company and that was fun.
Of course, over the years, blog surfing became easier. Widgets were developed to allow us to post blogrolls in our sidebars with links to other blogs. The best, I think, are the ones that include photos, don't you? More often than not, they entice me into visiting new blogs.
And speaking of "new" blogs, there are TONS of quilt blogs now, aren't there? I'm afraid I've become a little bit overwhelmed with the variety--I just don't know where to start, but more importantly, I don't know where to STOP, and then suddenly it's 2 a.m. and I have to get up for work in five hours! Yikes!
The absolute best thing about visiting quilt blogs--if I had to pick only one thing--is the inspiration that's found in seeing what other people are doing.
I'd like to pick your brain about quilt blogs and I know the best way to get you to leave a comment is by bribing you, so here's the deal. You tell me about your three favorite quilt blogs--the less well known the better because I already KNOW about Bonnie Hunter, Happy Zombie, various designers, etc. I'll randomly pick a commenter, and that person will win a little something. I'm not sure what that little something will be yet--I'll have to look around and see what I have, and it might be something like a pattern or two or some charms--something fun but not hugely valuable. I'll see what I have to offer as a prize and post a photo tomorrow (Sunday's post) and then I'll draw a winner Sunday night to be announced on Monday's post. And maybe we'll all find some new inspiration in blogs we didn't know about before. Kind of like I did when I discovered webrings.
My 3 favorite quilt blogs are Exuberant Color, Love Affair with My Brother and Cluck, Cluck, Sew. I also enjoy A Little Bit Biased, Sister's Choice and Will Work for Fabric.
ReplyDeleteWell my #1 was easy...Connie at Quilting by the River (she inspires me every time she posts), #2 would be Meadowbrook (she is working her way thru the 365 Quilt Calendar and I love seeing the blocks every day) and #3 would be The Average Quilter (because she is in Louisiana like me). Thanks for the opportunity to share great blogs and win something too!
ReplyDeleteQuilting by the River--Lots of tutorials, Quilt Hollow--Shares lots of ideas and will quilt for you, and last but not least Cupcakes 'n' Dasies--Thelma's personality is great and gives lots of instructions.
ReplyDeleteShelia
Hi!
ReplyDeleteWell, for one, you could check out my blog, I have a number of Australian and of course, Canadian bloggers on my list. I find the Australian bloggers give quilting a different viewpoint. I'd further suggest:
-Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara
-Sweet P Creations by Paulette Doyle
-and the group Freebies for Crafters, that will give you a new "webring" to check out! Lots of freebie tutorials by different bloggers.
Take care, Leslie
I go read three blogs every day, umm yours, Bonnie's and Judy Laquidara.
ReplyDeleteI also like Kaaren at the Painted Quilt:
http://thepaintedquilt.blogspot.ca/Kathy at Kathy's Quilts:
http://kathysquilts.blogspot.ca/
and Erin at One Piece at a Time
http://www.erinrussek.typepad.com/
and for something completely diffrent, Christine at:
http://www.frontporchindiana.blogspot.ca/
Helen
Well, dahlink, I read YOURS every day, of course, and some of those that previous commenters have listed. I also love these that have not been mentioned by others (so far): (1) http://piecemealquilts.wordpress.com/ whom I discovered when I was making baskets. She is meticulous, gives good instructions, and is generous with tutorials and free patterns. (2) Then there is Kathie at http://inspiredbyantiquequilts.blogspot.com/ who feeds the piece of me that plays Civil War fabrics. (3) Karen Dianne at http://leehaven.com/ does beautiful things and takes her time; she also has introduced me to inklingo which I haven't tried yet but, GF, it is just a matter of time. I could go on and on . . . . but you asked for 3.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Cupcakes 'n Daisies. I love the pictures that Thelma shows and seeing all of her lifetime quilts. I also enjoy Sister's Choice Quilts. Two others that I also frequent are A Quilting Life and The Cottage Home.
ReplyDeletePicking only 3 blogs to tell you about is hard! I'm sure you know about quite a few of my favorites (Cluck Cluck Sew, Oh Fransson!, Red Pepper Quilts) but maybe these would be new to you: Quiltification, The Sometimes Crafter and I Have to Say. There are just so many excellent quilting blogs out there -- including yours! Happy quilting! :D
ReplyDeleteKaren at Log Cabin Quilter, Carrie P. at A Passion for Appliqué, Anne at Cottons and Wools, the list goes on! There are way more than these that I check daily. But I have to say that Pinterest is fun too!
ReplyDeleteThis was fun because it reminded me of how I found blogs. I was looking for a mountain pattern on Google and was led to Bonnie's site and her Majestic Mountains pattern. I didn't know what blogs were but followed the link from her website and discovered the world's biggest time eater. Now, my morning starts with you and Nancy near Philadelphia, Sisters Choice, Taniwa (in Japan), Strawberry Patch, and Block by Block (sorry, that's more than three, but you see my problem) Just keep doing what you do. Sue
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would be qulting without blogs. While taking my first class I did some research on the quilt top I would be making (Turnng 20 Again). I wanted to see what fabrics others had used. And then I found the quilt blogging world. I am pretty slow getting into blogging.... over a year, less than 100 followers, but I do it for myself.... so my fav 3 are Tracey @ http://traceyjayquilts.blogspot.com/, Julie @ http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/, & Brooke @ http://pitterputterstitch.blogspot.com.
ReplyDeleteFor reproduction inspiration I like Kathie at Inspired by Antique Quilts. My two favorite blogs for modern inspiration would be Materialobsession.typepad.com and Cabbagequilts.blogspot.com. I love the way they combine fabric and remake traditional designs into something so new and refreshing.
ReplyDeleteBlogs have been soooo fun to follow. Your blog was one of my first 'discoveries' and I continue to love it. Three of my favorites that I would like to share are: Jennifer @ http://thegrandsurprise.blogspot.com/; Anna @ http://woolymammoth.blogspot.com/; Nancy @ http://tomminerquilts.blogpot.com.
ReplyDeleteTwo of my daily reads have already been mentioned: Paulette @ Sweet P's Quilting & Creations; Anna @ Woolie Mammoth - but I also enjoy Cathy @ Blueberry Patch (http://cathy-blueberrypatch.blogspot.ca/2012/03/fabric-frenzy-friday.html). And yours, of course!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Pinkadot Quilts because she always has something great to show, A little bit Biased because she usually shows some amazing fabric, and Crazy mom quilts because I am always inspired by things she posts. My collection of blogs I read is rather long too, but I enjoy them soooo much!!
ReplyDeleteWell, besides yours....Sisters Choice Quilts - very inspirational and she quilts up a storm! Quilt Hollow - Mary is an amazing long arm quilter. I've sent several quilts to her and she does an amazing job. Cupcakes 'n Daisies - Thelma is so funny and another quilter who fires it up and produces quilts nearly weekly.
ReplyDeleteMany of my favs are already listed but here are a couple more: Tallgrass Prairie, Pretty By Hand, nancompany, cut to pieces, and alamode...'course there's lots of good designer ones too but you said you didn't want those. My favorites list is pretty long now but I'll have to peek at a couple listed here :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you! I would get sooo much more actual quilting done if I stayed off quilting blogs, but I love seeing what others are working on and they are so inspirational! My list of "quilts-to-make" seems to grow with each new quilt blog and I'm with you - blogging instead of sleeping and waking up tired all of the time...bad habit to get into, but quilt blogs are so addictive....Aarrrggghhh!! Okay, all of that being said, here are my three favorite blogs at the moment: Log Cabin Quilter, Raspberry Rabbits (I think I found this one from your blog!), and Cottons and Wool. P.S. Love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteThe three different ones I read are Subeesews, the paintedquilt, and exuberantcolor.
ReplyDeleteThat's only scratching the surface but that's how I spend my morning coffee break. Thanks Kim.
happy quilting Marge
Here are three I've recently discovered:
ReplyDeletehttp://auntiesquaintquilts.blogspot.com

I only discovered quilting blogs about 3.5 years ago and the first one was Quiltville. Wish I had known years earlier that there was such a thing! Some fave reads are Quilting in my Pyjamas, Taniwa, and Loft Creations. One is an Aussie who is hilarious, one is a half-Japanese who shares her culture, and the third a designer with a modern bent and a great photographer. I also visit you every day.
ReplyDeleteNearly all my favorites have been mentioned (Kaaren @ The Painted Quilt, Erin @ One Piece at a Time, Bonnie @ Quiltville) There are a couple others that I have come to look forward to every day: Faye @ BubzRugz, Tonya @ Hillbilly Handiworks, Jenny @ Jenny of Elefantz, Lori @ Bee In My Bonnet, Kristie @ Cowgirl Quilter. Umm, sorry that's more than 3. Hope you enjoy.

Very inspiring, and lots of free patterns!

I like what she shares about her family and the design process.
http://thebitchystitcher.blogspot.com/
This one is not for the prim and proper, and be careful of the links...
http://www.with-heart-and-hands.com
This lady has an incredible list of free projects, but her stories about her parents and Alzheimers is very moving.
http://waynekollingersquiltblog.blogspot.com/
Amazing what this man does with blocks. Makes you look at things in new ways!
Sorry, couldn't keep it to three -- it was a struggle to keep it this short!
I start my blog reading each day by reading your blog. Then I go to Bonnie Hunter's blog, then to Nancy, Near Philadelphia. I read most of the bloggers listed in Nancy's list. Then I go to Jo's Country Junction blog, That Man Quilts and then Barrister's Block.
ReplyDeleteI know that is more than 3. I'm inspired by the different quilts, enjoy reading about what others share of their family and life in general and love to see pictures of family and pets. It's my way of 'getting out in the world'.
Thanks for sharing.
cindy
Yours is ALWAYS read first! Many of my favorites have already been mentioned..Judy Lacquidara's Patchwork Times, Bonnie's Quiltville, Taniwa, Nichole at Sisters Choice. So less mentioned daily favs: Jo's Country Junction, Pat at Bell Creek Quilts and Mama Sparks World.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy many blogs, but here's a few favourites:

Julie @ My Quilt Diary makes beautiful quilts, all by hand, and she has so many interesting tales about life in Japan.
Maria @ Life on the Block shows a wonderful variety of quilting and handstitch goodness and we get to go swimming in the ocean with her and her group of ladies every now and then.
Like the others I have many and with Google Reader, I know when a new post is up. I always enjoy yours, With Thread in Hand, Nebraska Views, Elaine Adair Pieces, Pieces from my Scrapbag, Between the Q and the U, Selvage Blog, Quilt Dad, Lazy Gal Quilting and many many others. Those are some I think had not been mentioned above. I will enjoy looking up some of those mentioned I had not heard of.
ReplyDeleteI have my favorite list too, including many mentioned above. I enjoy Lane of That Man Quilts? Rachel at Stitched in Color and Sew Many Ways. You and these other people inspired me to start my own, the Patriotic Quilter.
ReplyDeleteSome of the others have listed some of my favorites like Exuberant Quilter (wanda hanson) and Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara.
ReplyDeleteSome that have not been mentioned are Making Stash Quilts from Stash(Mary Johnson from Minnesota), bejewelled by Barb- barbara Gaddy who was living overseas and is now living back in the states, Stray Stitches by Linda G. and Pat of Silver Thimble Talk who has recently written a quilting book are some of the ones that I frequently read. I also want to include with Heart and hands by Michele Bilyeu- she is from Oregon and is dedicated to supporting the AAQI initiative that supports research for Alzheimers by making art quilts.
Here are some Canadian blogs for you to check out- Poppyprint ( Krista lives in The lower mainland Vancouver area) and writes a terrific blog , Sweet P. ( paulette), Cara quilts from Ontario and a local Edmonton area quilter- Cathy Tomm quilts .
This list could go on and on- There are blogs that I go to visit to read because I am inspired by the quilting that is happening there, while there are others that I stop by because I love the way they tell their story as well as share their passion for quilting. ( Yours is one of those :O)
I have been reading blogs for about 5 years and I discover new ones all the time. The biggest problem is finding time to read, write and quilt - balancing that is one of my biggest challenges.
You knew that I would give you more than 3 LOL..
Regards,
Anna

I could keep going but I'll stop there. It becomes addictive.
