Voila!

Done! I wish I could say the same about the rest of the house. The funny thing about redecorating a room is the amount of mess it makes in every other room of the house. Now I have several things here and there to put away or find a place for.

I have a lot of photos to share with you tonight. First, here's a pile of some of the stuff I started with:

On the right is a blue tab top curtain I bought at the thrift store for $5 and in the center is a crib sized bedskirt--another thrift store buy for a couple dollars. The first job of the day was to recover the inset panels in the room--these are made much like the "headboard" panels in my bedroom. That green and white mattress ticking fabric on the left is what I pulled from my stash to use. Here's a "before" panel--at one time, my daughter wanted a wild animal theme:

Then here's one recovered and back up on the door. I had two of this size and four smaller ones to cover.

You can kind of see one of the smaller ones there to the side of the chair. The animal themed chair. Yeah, I gotta do something about that too, but I left it "as is" for now.

The next little job was to do something with the navy and tan mats used in this hand painted, signed little picture I found at the thrift shop for 99 cents. The mats reeked of 1980s country decor. I painted the inner mat black and covered the outer mat with a plaid fabric.

Next it was time to get working on the curtains. I cut off the tab tops on the blue curtain and sewed in a casing for the rod. Then I pulled out the crib skirt and cut off one of the long sides.

I sewed a casing in that as well and hung the curtains. I thought about splitting the blue curtain to make two panels, one on each side of the window, but I ended up just using the single curtain pulled back to one side because the bed interferes with a curtain on the other side anyway. (You can see my little picture there on the wall to the left of the window.)

I used some silk ivy and a little rusty watering can to hold back the curtain--there's silk ivy above the valance too.

With some of the leftover bed skirt, I made a pillow cover:

A couple more thrift store buys--a frilly Ralph Lauren sheet for $2 and two Battenberg lace pillow cases for $5. And, below, a blue bowl for $1.99 that I filled with white silk hydrangeas:

And my $5 thrift store lamp--we had to buy a finial and harp to hold the shade, but the shade was in the garage.

And you remember the tea pot I showed you before? I set up a nice bed tray--just in case anyone wants to serve me breakfast in bed on Mother's Day. Maybe they'll write the menu on that little blackboard I found in the Target $1 aisle--have you checked that out? I usually ignore it but I found a couple things there the last time I went in.

The wooden cat I repainted a few weeks ago has found a home--and a bird's nest!

I think I'm going to go to bed now and wait for breakfast. Happy Mother's Day everyone!

  9. In the UK we call thrift stores 'charity shops' as they are all raising money for charitable causes. I want to come to the charity shops you go to because you have managed to get far better stuff than I do and I live in the 'charity shop' capital of the UK!

  13. It's beautiful!

You got me in the thrift shopping mood. It didn't help that my daughter casually said she wanted a wicker chair for her front porch. Saturday I went to the thrift store and voila! I found a wicker chair! Now all I need to do is work on it a little and paint it.
